"Never again!"

After terrorism, now xenophobia: thats the most dangerous tendency for Russia!

Thats what Lyudmila Mikhailovna Alekseeva, chairwoman of the Moscow-Helsinki Group, said on the press conference Youth actions against fascism, racism and nationalism.

The press conference took place at the Independent Press Center on November 15th in order to summarize the results of the action Kristallnacht - Never again!, which was carried out by the International Network - Youth Human Rights Movement (YHRM) in cooperation with UNITED, the European network against nationalism, racism and fascism.

Participants of the press conference were:
- Lyudmila Mikhailovna Alekseeva, chairman of the Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG),
- Andrei Yurov, leader of the International Network - Youth Human Rights Movement (YHRM),
- Anastasia Nikitina, coordinator of the Youth Network against racism and intolerance within the framework of the YHRM.

I am shocked by the national language used by some political parties, especially Rodina (Homeland). They name themselves followers of the countrys unity and integrity, but in our multethnic state, arousing hostility among the nations is the first step to the break-up of the country. If Russia is only for the Russians, the countrys unity and integrity will not be a question anymore. After terrorism, now xenophobia: thats the most dangerous tendency for Russia, said - Lyudmila Alekseeva.

If the citizens wish for fascism, nationalism and xenophobia to stop flourishing, they have to express their negative attitude to such sentiments in public. Some time ago the YHRM acted against fascism, nationalism and anti-Semitism just with educational work, now we call young people to active non-violent measures. The fascists must feel ashamed! declared Anastasia Nikitina, coordinator of the Youth Network against racism and intolerance.

Anastasia Nikitina presented youth actions which were carried out in 20 regions of Russia and the CIS states from 9th to 16th of November. Within 8 days, school lessons, open lectures, street actions, anti-fascist youth festivals, and round tables on the issue of fascism, anti-Semitism and nationalism took place. In Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus a survey was carried out among Jewish organizations.

YHRM leader Andrei Yurov addressed journalists with a call for help: We have not only arranged this meeting to demonstrate what we have achieved; we address to the whole Mass Media as the Fourth Power. Together we are able to show the citizens the danger and the dimension of the problem, to show ways of its solution. We are able to force the other three branches of power to fulfill their duty and protect the citizens from fascism and nationalism.

The action Kristallnacht - Never again! was carried out within the framework of the project Antifascism and tolerance and was supported by the McArthur Foundation
